La Marée Is The Brand To Know

As we count down the days until summer, we find ourselves searching for inspiration and reminders that warmer weather is just around the corner. And since we at Surf Collective hope to bring our readers their daily dose of inspiration through sharing stories of people, places, and things that make our lives richer (and warmer), I couldn’t think of a better subject to write about than my friend Jessie Rudin and her new line of swimwear, La Marée.

When you first meet Jessie, there are a few things that instantly strike you about her personality and style. With chestnut brown hair and a nice golden tan (even in the dead of winter) Jessie effortlessly sports a chic and stylish outfit that is a perfect mix of classic New York prep and laid back beach boho. Just as you take note of her style, she will give you a smile that not only makes you feel genuinely special, but also assures you that she is someone whose opinion and style advice is one to be trusted.

Eager to know more about La Marée and the vision behind it, I sat down with Jessie to discover how her upbringing and her interests growing up have helped cultivate her personal style and in turn, the creative mindset behind La Marée. Jessie describes herself as having been the ‘classic tomboy,’ but also someone who appreciated and valued the beauty of fashion and design. “Having an older brother, I was always really active and wanted to keep up with him. I was a classic tomboy for the most part, running around in bikini bottoms only. But I also loved girly time with my Mom and loved looking through all of her fashion magazines with her. I loved laying in her dressing room, when she would be getting ready for a night out with my Dad.” Knowing this, it is evident that the juxtaposition of both her tomboy and girly personalities have contributed to her unique style, which is perfectly represented in her swimwear line.

Always having a DIY mentality to things, Jessie’s dream was to start a swimwear line that properly accentuated and highlighted a woman’s beauty. In describing what really made her take the plunge to turn her dream and vision into a reality, she says “For a long time, I had a dream of starting a swimwear line, and rather than talk about doing it and wishing I could make it happen, I just went for it. I knew this was something I had to do... I couldn’t find swimwear that I loved entirely and I was always thinking of ways of changing it. When I realized my life was missing that personal creative outlet, I knew I had to find a way to bring creativity back into my career. La Marée Swimwear was the missing piece.”

As Coco Chanel once said, “Fashion is in the sky, in the street, fashion has to do with ideas, the way we live, what is happening” and for Jessie, it was all of those things that have helped make La Marée so classic, yet unique. “My mom was a big style influence for me when I was younger and I can definitely credit her with my classic sensibility. I tend to think of my style as “Preppy Bohemian”...I know its an odd combination, but my bohemian side comes from my travels and my love of all things from the 1960s. As an adult, I have been lucky enough to travel a good amount and I continue to draw from the destinations I visit as well as my summers spent in Amagansett.” With that in mind and knowing that fashion is just as much about how you feel as as how you look, Jessie hopes that women who wear La Marée always feel confident, sexy, and chic. Plus she’d love to expand the line, so that she can outfit little girls in La Marée – “I look forward to having my own La Marée- wearing babies one day!”

With New York City as her home and her love of the beach, sand and a laid back lifestyle always on her mind, Jessie has been able to use the dichotomy of these two worlds to create a chic yet classic line of swimsuits. Embodying everything we celebrate here at Surf Collective – style, culture, creativity, and ingenuity – we believe this is one brand you should know heading into the much anticipated summer season, but if you don’t believe us, you’ll just have to try one for yourself.
